Over the past twenty years, coffee consumption has only increased. The most common habit of everyone before the pandemic was to enjoy coffee to go or in their favorite bar. The pandemic has changed these consumption habits for many. Home-made quality coffee has become a passion for many. The coffee industry has to adapt to the new morning routines.
The pandemic has prevented many people from enjoying their daily fresh coffee at the local coffee shop or to take on the way to the office. Many have invested over time in semi-professional coffee machines or quality, local coffee purchased from specialty stores to enjoy all the flavors they crave.
The coffee industry has understood these new trends and we have seen the emergence of new products in supermarkets:
- quality instant coffees
- ecological coffee beans or ground coffee where the producer's ethics are transparent
- coffee in bags to be brewed like tea
- ready-to-go coffees in cans or bottles
2022 marks the return to "normal" life and the HORECA environment must adapt and stand out. Bars must regain their morning clientele and coffee specialists must distinguish themselves to attract new regulars.
Here are the new market trends that will stand out this year
- Healthy Coffee: Healthy coffees will become more important as people consider how to reduce their dietary fat intake, improve their overall health and, in particular, their body's gut health. Lately, we are seeing healthy coffee additives, such as collagen creams or alternative milks, and healthier coffee alternatives, such as mushroom or turmeric coffee and matcha lattes.
- Flash Brew VS Cold Brew: Instant chill is slowly replacing cold brew, and it has to be said that this isn't really a surprise, especially because pressure chilled coffee takes less time to create than cold brew formats and also has much more flavor. Not only that it's also a much better alternative to iced coffee, mainly because you don't have to worry about ice cubes, which dilutes your coffee even more.
- Custom coffee: Custom orders have been on the rise for some time, although coffee shops across Europe have not caught on to this American craze. Let your customers create their own drink from scratch. They will choose the type of drink, the size and any additions such as toppings or syrup flavors. After they place their order, the barista will make them a drink that contains everything the customer wants.
